Cleats, Cleats and More Cleats

Bow cleat

One of the first "enhancements" we did to our Holder was to add some mooring cleats as we had no way of mooring the boat to the dock after launching, or nowhere to attach our anchor line.

We placed one large cleat on the bow, as far forward as we could, bearing in mind that the storage area in the bow doesn't extend all the way to the bow. This in fact ended up in placing the cleat smack in the middle of the fore-deck. The cleat doesn't interfere with the jib or the furling line.

We then added 2 cleats to both sides in the stern. It was decided to attach them parallel with the stern as there was more room to bolt them down without them being right on the edge of the gunwale.

So far they have all worked out well and haven't gotten in the way of any lines.

One of the first things I was dying to get my hands on was the teak. It was very weather beaten and had probably never seen a coat of teak oil in it's life. After a good teak cleaner, teak brightener then oiling it looked almost as good as new.

The piece of teak which ran above the centre board was totally rotten where the mast step (tabernacle?) was bolted down, so rather than try and repair it, we decided to have a nice new piece of teak made. This was done by Steve's Yacht Repairs in Annapolis, MD and I must say they did a beautiful job. (a bit pricey but excellent craftsmanship so it was worth it).
